Every night, there are hundreds of homeless youth living on Milwaukee streets. Without help, without hope, these young adults may never get the chance to be their best selves.
That’s where Pathfinders comes in. Through a wide array of wraparound services, including the Q*Blok program for LGBT youth, Pathfinders empowers youth in crisis to make positive life choices.
COURAGE began with a local couple, Brad and Nick Schlaikowski, who felt strongly that the LGBT community should take care of its own youth.
“The idea of Courage: an event for homeless LGBTQ youth came after my husband and I fostered an incredible young lady that was kicked out of her family’s home after she came out.”
“Her story painted a horrific picture too close to home and we knew that we needed to do more. You see, studies have shown that 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ and the number one reason these children become homeless is the fact that their families cannot accept them for who they are.”
“At any given moment, it is estimated that there are at least 400 homeless youth in a city that currently, there are only 16 emergency shelter beds for runway and homeless youth.”
Working with passionate volunteers, devoted community partners and a talented event planning team, Nick and Brad have assembled an evening Milwaukee will never forget.
Hosted by international celebrity stylist Gregory Patterson of Project Runway, COURAGE will include a drag cabaret performance, silent auction, coat drive and other surprises. The fundraiser will take place at The Point, a new event space at 906 S. Barclay St. in the Walker’s Point neighborhood.
